Electric Mobility Scooters

Electric mobility scooters are fast replacing gas-run mobility scooters as vehicles for the locomotion-impaired. A large chunk of mobility scooter users such as the elderly and disabled are opting for electric mobility scooters for their convenience, comfort and greater speeds.

Electric mobility scooters need batteries to run. A typical mobility scooter would require two 12-volt batteries. Sealed lead rechargeable batteries are used and the charger is often supplied on board. Chargers have one plug-in AC point, but newer models have two points, one at the side and one at the rear of the scooter. This enables the user to get the vehicle charged without having to dismount.

Initially, electric mobility scooters were rejected by buyers. The reason behind this was the low life of batteries. Early batteries needed repeated charging; hence, the scooters could not be used for longer times. However, with the invention of more sophisticated battery technology, batteries are operable for longer times, providing mileages of about 8 to 10 hours per charging, which translates into a distance of 20 to 30 miles. Modern batteries can give speeds of 4 to 8 mph to electric mobility scooters. Batteries are available in 18 AH to 75 AH versions. The version of the battery decides the wattage of the scooter's motor.

Electric mobility scooters come with several convenient features for the users. They have a highly flexible tiller, which can be used to steer the scooter in any direction. Their seats are fixed on stems, which can be either sliding or swivel. Some seats can rotate by as much as 360 degrees, which allow the user freedom to move in any which way. Seats are cushioned and may have head rests for added comfort. Electric mobility scooters are also provided with carriers affixed to the tiller or at the rear end of the seat.

There are two basic versions of the electric mobility scooter - the foldable type and the utility type. Foldable electric mobility scooters are highly popular. They can be dismantled into four parts and be stashed away when not in use. The utility type scooters are sleeker and can be used for larger distances, but they cannot be disassembled.

Electric mobility scooters are more expensive than gas-run or mechanized scooters. They cost around ,000. However, if the scooters are prescribed by doctors, then their costs are covered by medical insurance. Electric mobility scooters and their components are also exempt of VAT for the elderly and the disabled.

The Schwinn Airdyne Bike - A Good Choice?

!9# The Schwinn Airdyne Bike - A Good Choice?

The Schwinn Airdyne bike has been made and sold since the 1970's. But is it still competitive compared to all the recumbent exercise bikes today with computerized workout routines built in and magnetic drives? Is there a reason why Schwinn can still sell this exercise bike?

The Schwinn Air-Dyne bikes introduced the fan resistance exercise. The concept is simple. You pedal the bike and the pedaling turns a large fan. The faster you pedal, the faster the fan turns and the harder it is to turn. So the resistance increases as you pedal faster.

Also the handle bars are linked to the pedals so the handlebars move as you pedal. You can "pedal" just with your arms or just with your legs or with your arms and your legs together. So someone with a injury can work just the legs or just the arms.

If you push the handlebars and the pedals, you really get a total body workout. The handlebars work your entire upper body in a vigorous workout. You don't just work your arms, this thing works your arms, your shoulders, your back, really your entire upper body. Your lower body is worked on by the foot pedals. So it's a great machine for a muscle workout plus a heart and lungs routine too.

This machine is built like a tank! Every part of the Schwinn Airdyne is nearly indestructible. Every piece is heavy duty. That's why you can find a used one if you look for awhile. You literally cannot wear the thing out. You may get tired of it, but you won't wear it out. Of course you'll need batteries in the electronics and you might wear out a pedal or some minor piece, but this thing is made to last. Even the seat is super heavy weight and durable.

Mine was purchased used and now has 7,000 plus miles on it and except for a little rust from dripping perspiration and one worn pedal, it rides like new. Schwinn doesn't sell two of these to very many people. You can't wear it out.

What are the downsides? The bike is hard to move since it is so heavy. It does have wheels for rolling it around, but it's still hard to move. Secondly, it's noisy. The fan stirs up a lot of air and is loud, too noisy to listen to anything much while you pedal. That's about it on the downside.

Trampoline Pit - A Fun, Safe Alternative

Children love trampolines, and rightly so. The carefree feeling of jumping is one of life's simple pleasures. The trampoline, however, is not a perfect device. As with many toys, dangers are present. Fortunately, there are some alternatives to the traditional version that may be safer for your child.

The best known type is the above ground trampoline, where the surface is elevated a foot or two. Some parents show concerns that these trampolines may constitute safety hazards; indeed, there have been accidents caused by children accidentally falling off the edges and sustaining injuries. Luckily, there are alternatives. Safety devices are sold for above ground trampolines. Going even further, a trampoline pit avoids the safety issues altogether.

Pit trampolines, also known as in-ground trampolines, are just what the name implies: trampolines that are inserted into a pit in the ground so that the bouncing surface is at ground level. They eliminate the dangers caused by having a trampoline above the ground, and are a popular alternative to the "traditional" version.

After buying a pit trampoline, you must create a pit somewhere in your yard in which to place it. They are sold in various sizes and shapes; naturally, you will want to make a pit that will fit the trampoline you bought. It may seem like common sense, but buy the trampoline before you start digging.

When digging a trampoline pit, be careful - a badly designed pit can be just as much of a safety hazard as an elevated trampoline. Pits should be deep enough so that the trampoline is at ground level. Make sure the pit is drained of any still water, provide a method of further drainage, and make sure that the area is well ventilated so that air can flow freely while the trampoline is being used. You should also build a wall to retain the pit's shape. Finally, of course, be sure to provide ample room for the pit frames and beds.

The best thing about the trampoline pit is that it retains all of the best qualities of the above ground type: the sheer fun of using them. Jumping on a trampoline is fun whether it is lifted off the ground or level with it. Which type you choose is up to you, but rest assured: whichever you choose, your kids will appreciate it.

The risks of yo-yo

!9# The risks of yo-yo

[if ]

What draws us into starting a yo-yo diet is that it works in the short term. One feature of this diet is that it is severely restricted in terms of nutrient content and the amount of food taken in. Initially successful, the dieter loses the pounds she wants to lose but the problem arises when she goes off the diet and resumes her normal pattern of eating. It is next to impossible to maintain the weight lost through extreme dieting, and soon the dieter goes on another diet and the vicious cycle begins again.

Some studies suggest that yo-yo dieting may increase the risk for some health problems which includes high blood pressure, high cholesterol and gallbladder diseases and heart disease. Although these diseases may be affected by other factors such as familial predisposition, it cannot be overlooked that nutrition and diet play a considerable role in its development. Studies cite that sudden spikes in cholesterol levels when the dieter goes off the diet may be one of the reasons why the dieter may develop these conditions later on in life. There is still, however, no conclusive evidence if yo-yo dieting affects metabolism. Experts still believe that yo-yo dieting does not affect metabolism but because yo-yo dieting occurs intermittently during the lifespan, some mistakenly assume that it is the weight cycling that causes metabolic slumps. It has been studied and accepted that metabolism slows down by 1 to 2% for every decade of life.

More than the physical, the psychological effects of yo-yo diets may pose the more detrimental risk on a person. Repeatedly losing and gaining the weight lost sets up the person on an emotional rollercoaster. She may lose her drive to lead a more healthy lifestyle and may feel like a failure. Depression may set in and the dieter may lose her motivation to work towards realistic dietary changes that lead to stable weight management.

The best approach to losing weight is one that you can live with and to maintain. To plan health benefits of a balanced diet that can be integrated into your lifestyle well beyond the aesthetic value of a fad diet, the devastation to your physical and mental well-being can wreck.
